I believe I was probably a psychologist by the time I was ten, although I did not acquire the usual academic credentials to prove that until some time later. I went from kindergarten through high school in the Denver Public School System, earned a B.A. in psychology from Dartmouth, and a Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford. I am licensed as a psychologist in Maryland, listed in the National Register of Health Care Providers in Psychology, and a Diplomate in Marital and Family Therapy. I was on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine for more than twenty years, in the Departments of Psychiatry and Medicine. I have also conducted research on experimental forms of psychotherapy at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, consulted with the Maryland Division of Corrections, served as a Program Director at a private psychiatric hospital, and worked at a school for emotionally disturbed children as a Mental Health Team Leader. I have been in part-time private practice since 1973, and full-time since 1985. Although I have taken many professional workshops and advanced training over the years, the most important part of my preparation to be a psychotherapist is my having more than 25 years of personal psychotherapy.
The people I love, especially my children, are the only thing more important to me than my work.
